FROM TRAINING TO CAREER
BUILDING BLACK
FIRE SERVICE LEADERS
The Black Fire Brigade is a nonprofit organization dedicated to creating real career pathways for young African Americans in Chicago. We recruit, train, mentor, and prepare our students for high‑demand roles as Emergency Medical Technicians, paramedics, and firefighters — careers that offer stability, purpose, and the opportunity to serve their own communities. Founded by Black first responders, the Brigade was built to remove barriers, open doors, and ensure our students are fully equipped to enter the public‑safety workforce.
In just three years, we have helped hundreds of young people secure employment in hospitals, ambulance services, and fire departments across the Chicago region. Our graduates are earning competitive wages, supporting their families, and becoming leaders in the neighborhoods they grew up in. The Black Fire Brigade is more than a training program — it is a community‑driven solution to violence, unemployment, and inequity, building safer communities by building first responders.
The mission of the Black Fire Brigade is to promote and protect the fire service while advancing the professional growth, education, and well‑being of its members. We are committed to providing ongoing training, mentorship, and career‑building resources that prepare the next generation of Black first responders to serve with excellence. At the same time, we work to preserve and honor the rich history, heritage, and contributions of Black firefighters whose leadership and sacrifice have shaped the fire service. Through education, advocacy, and community engagement, the Black Fire Brigade strengthens the fire service today while building a legacy for tomorrow.
How We MakeIt Happen
The Black Fire Brigade is recognized as the number one crime‑reduction program in the State of Illinois — a community‑driven force creating first responders one EMT at a time. Our mission is powered by action, opportunity, and unwavering commitment to the young people we serve.
We advance this work by securing generous donations from supporters who believe in our impact, hosting fundraising events that bring our community together, and staying deeply engaged in the neighborhoods we protect. Every contribution, every event, and every moment of service helps us build safer communities and open doors to life‑changing careers.
