ready to become a
Firefighter
What is a
firefighter
A firefighter is a highly trained public‑safety professional dedicated to protecting lives, property, and the community during emergencies. Their work goes far beyond extinguishing fires—they respond to medical calls, rescue situations, hazardous‑materials incidents, and natural disasters with skill, courage, and precision. Firefighters are trained in fire suppression, emergency medical care, technical rescue, and community risk reduction, allowing them to act quickly and effectively in high‑pressure situations. They serve as trusted first responders who combine physical readiness, teamwork, and compassion to safeguard the communities they are sworn to protect.
Black Fire Brigade
Firefighter Training Program
Preparing the next generation of Black first responders through training, mentorship, and job placement.
The Black Fire Brigade’s Firefighter Program provides a comprehensive, career‑ready pathway for individuals preparing to enter the fire service. Students receive foundational and advanced instruction in fire behavior, suppression techniques, rescue operations, hazardous‑materials awareness, emergency medical response, and the physical conditioning required to perform effectively in high‑risk environments. Guided by experienced firefighters and public‑safety professionals, participants gain the technical skills, discipline, and real‑world readiness needed to serve in fire departments across Chicago and beyond. The program is designed to build confident, capable first responders who are committed to protecting lives, property, and their communities.
In addition to classroom and hands‑on training, all students are required to complete a designated number of community service hours within their neighborhoods. This service requirement reinforces the Brigade’s mission to develop firefighters who are not only skilled in emergency response but also deeply connected to the communities they serve. By combining rigorous fire‑service preparation with meaningful community engagement, the program ensures graduates emerge as well‑rounded, service‑driven leaders ready to make a lasting impact.
Important Notice: Applicants to the Black Fire Brigade Firefighter Program must already be certified EMTs before beginning the application process. If you are not yet an EMT, please visit our EMT Program page to complete the required training and certification prior to applying.
