What Is AnEMT?

An Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) is a trained healthcare professional who provides fast, life‑saving care during medical emergencies. EMTs are often the first to arrive on the scene, assessing a patient’s condition, performing essential treatments such as CPR, controlling bleeding, stabilizing injuries, and safely transporting individuals to hospitals for further care. They work in high‑pressure situations with calm, skill, and compassion, serving as a critical link between the community and the emergency medical system.

Black Fire Brigade

EMT Career Pathway Program

Preparing the next generation of Black first responders through training, mentorship, and job placement.

The Black Fire Brigade’s EMT program provides a structured, career‑building pathway for young adults in Chicago who are pursuing emergency medical services. Participants receive high‑quality EMT training, hands‑on skills development, professional mentorship, and direct support in securing employment with hospitals, ambulance services, and public‑safety agencies. The program is designed to build confidence, competence, and community pride—giving students the exposure, certifications, and real‑world experience they need to launch meaningful careers serving their neighborhoods. Through this work, the Black Fire Brigade not only prepares future EMTs but also strengthens the pipeline of Black first responders across the city.

In addition to their academic and hands‑on training, all students in the EMT program are required to complete a designated number of community service hours within their neighborhoods. This service component reinforces the Black Fire Brigade’s commitment to developing well‑rounded first responders who understand the importance of giving back, building trust, and staying connected to the communities they will one day serve. Successful completion of these service hours—along with all coursework, skills assessments, and program assignments—is required for graduation.
