ready to become a
paramedic
What is a
Paramedic
A paramedic is a highly trained emergency medical professional who provides advanced life‑support care during critical and often life‑threatening situations. Building on the foundation of EMT training, paramedics are skilled in performing complex medical procedures such as cardiac monitoring, administering medications, managing airways, starting IVs, and delivering rapid interventions that can stabilize patients before they reach the hospital. They work in fast‑paced, high‑pressure environments where quick thinking, clinical expertise, and compassion are essential. Paramedics serve as a vital link in the emergency medical system, bringing hospital‑level care directly to the scene when every second matters.
Black Fire Brigade
Paramedic Program
Preparing the next generation of Black first responders through training, mentorship, and job placement.
The Black Fire Brigade’s Paramedic Program offers an advanced, career‑accelerating pathway for EMTs who are ready to deepen their clinical expertise and step into higher‑level emergency medical roles. Through rigorous classroom instruction, immersive clinical rotations, and hands‑on field experience, students gain the technical proficiency, critical‑thinking skills, and confidence required to deliver advanced life‑support care in high‑pressure situations. Guided by experienced paramedics, instructors, and public‑safety professionals, participants receive the mentorship and real‑world preparation needed to excel in hospitals, fire departments, and EMS agencies across Chicago.
In addition to academic and clinical requirements, all students must complete a designated number of community service hours within their neighborhoods. This service component reinforces the Brigade’s mission to develop compassionate, community‑centered clinicians who remain connected to the people they serve. By combining advanced medical training with meaningful community engagement, the program ensures graduates are not only highly skilled paramedics but also trusted, service‑driven leaders within Chicago’s emergency medical system.
Important Notice: Applicants to the Black Fire Brigade Paramedic Program must already be certified EMTs before beginning the application process. If you are not yet an EMT, please visit our EMT Program page to complete the required training and certification prior to applying.
